Mark, a 21 year
old builder, came into the clinic on a Monday morning
with a painful swollen knee after being tackled awkwardly
during a game of football the previous Saturday. Mark was
worried that he might have damaged a cartilage. A thorough
examination indicated a strain of the ligament of the inside
of the knee, a test showed that cartilage damage was unlikely.
Treatment consisted of a programme of
home exercises, graduated in difficulty and appropriate
to Mark's sport. Deep massage and ultrasound also accelerated
the healing process. Mark was also taught a programme of
warming up and cooling down stretches and returned to football
after six weeks.
