John,
a 40 year old office worker, came to the clinic complaining
of severe low back pain with pain travelling down the back
of his thigh which had started after a weekend of gardening.
Following the examination, it was found that he was suffering
from the signs of an irritated disc in the lumber region
with resultant irritation of the sciatic nerve.
John had 4 treatments consisting of Electrotherapy for pain
relief, mobilisation of the nerve and joints affected. He
was also given advise about self help exercises, posture
at work, correct ways to lift and garden and how to prevent
a repeat episode. Additionally, we talked about John's work
and his workstation in relation to his desk, chair and computer.
Following the treatments John was
free from pain, felt that he understood the causes of his
problem, and was confident he could reduce the chances of
his problem re-occurring. He was also given a regime of
pilates exercises (research has shown that this can decrease
the recurrence of problems by up to 50%)
